Razvan Marin will play on a rental basis for Empoli next season. The midfielder who failed at Ajax remains active in Serie A in this way, because the Romanian relegated to the second level with Cagliari last season. However, Ajax is missing out on money due to the rental deal.

Cagliari took over Marin from the Amsterdammers in 2020 for an amount of approximately ten million euros. The then director of football affairs Marc Overmars stipulated a resale percentage, but that only applies to a definitive transfer. Because Marin is now rented out, Ajax has no right to money. The reigning champion can still earn from the midfielder, since Empoli has negotiated an option to buy. It is not clear what amount has been agreed.

Ajax will be disappointed that the Romanian playmaker is now making a rental transfer to Empoli, the number fourteen of the past Serie A season. A year ago, Marin was even better. Then he was linked to clubs such as AC Milan and Olympique Lyon. However, things did not go through and after a disappointing season at Cagliari, the midfielder’s status has declined significantly. on Transfermarkt the value of the player is still estimated at twelve million euros.

At Ajax, Marin could never live up to expectations. He was picked up from Standard Liège in 2019 and eventually had to become the successor to Frenkie de Jong in midfield, but after a few games as a basic player, trainer Erik ten Hag had seen enough. The playmaker from Bucharest was referred to the reserve bench and did not really get out of it. In total, Marin played seventeen games for the team from Amsterdam, in which scoring was unsuccessful.
