Ajax can prepare for a European diptych with Union Berlin. During the draw in Nyon, Switzerland for the intermediate round in the Europa League, the team of trainer Urs Fischer came out of the box. The first match will be played on Thursday, February 16, 2023. The return will take place a week later. Sheraldo Becker and Danilho Doekhi play at Union, both of whom have a past in Amsterdam, they reached Jong Ajax.
Before the knockout phase of the Europa League starts, there is first an intermediate round. In it, the eight numbers three from the Champions League will compete against the eight numbers two from the group stage of the Europa League. Because clubs from the same country cannot yet meet in this round, a meeting between Ajax and PSV was ruled out in advance. The team from Amsterdam now has to deal with Union.
The two teams have never played against each other in official matches. In 2020 Ajax and Union did practice and the match ended at 2-2. Carel Eiting and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp then scored on behalf of the team from Amsterdam. In the 2021/22 Conference League season, the German traditionsverein already against Feyenoord. The team from Rotterdam managed to win twice: in De Kuip it was 3-1 and two weeks later the meeting in Berlin ended in 1-2.
After a disappointing Champions League campaign, Ajax still managed to claim third place in the group. They lost home and away to both Liverpool and Napoli. However, the Rangers of Giovanni van Bronckhorst was defeated twice. With the achieved third place in Group A, the team from Amsterdam can now show it in the Europa League. On Thursday, February 16, Ajax will play the first leg in the Johan Cruijff ArenA and a week later the return will be in Berlin.
