Joris Mathijsen will most likely be the new technical director of ADO Den Haag, reports The Telegraph. Sources around the club report to the newspaper that the former defender is the only remaining candidate for the position. Mathijsen is expected to be appointed around the weekend.

At ADO, Mathijsen must succeed Daryl Janmaat. The former defender was appointed technical manager in the summer of 2022, but left the Hofstad club after five months. Janmaat would not have agreed with the decisions made within the club. Janmaat revealed in mid-November 2022 opposite Football International that he decided to resign after a discussion with the management. Janmaat did not reveal the exact reason for his decision. The names of Henk van Stee and John de Jong have already been mentioned at ADO as his successor, but Mathijsen will most likely be the new technical man at the club from the Kitchen Champion Division.

After ending his playing career at Feyenoord in 2015, Mathijsen was approached by his former club Willem II to consider a technical position. Initially, the 84-time the Dutch international did not respond to this, but later he was persuaded. After he started working as a technical manager in 2016, he became the technical director of the Tilburg team a year later. In that position he worked together with Martin van Geel, the then general manager.

Mathijsen was employed by Willem II until the end of March 2022. The driver was then fired because he showed solidarity with former trainer Fred Grim, who received his congé three weeks earlier. Mathijsen was instructed by the supervisory board to fire Grim, but refused to do so. Mathijsen was then suspended. Grim’s dismissal came after he led the Tilburgers to European football. In the season interrupted by corona, Willem II finished fifth in the Eredivisie.
